Tasting notes
The 1993 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a touch of hickory on the nose and dried meat mixed with white pepper. It's a rather old-school wine, where the oak barrels hold a lot of sway. The palate is tannic and a little hard, solid but missing grace. This feels labored. Tasted at the Southwold Burgundy dinner at Hatched restaurant.

Mongeard's better 1993s include a medium ruby-colored, raspberry-scented Echezeaux. Revealing plenty of oak, medium body, and moderately good concentration, this elegant, smoky Pinot Noir reveals firm tannin in the compact finish. Give it 1-2 years of cellaring and keep your fingers crossed that the fruit holds up. It should last for a decade. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Chester, VT; tel. (802) 875-2139
