Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos de l’Arlot 2011 has a masculine, tertiary, sous-bois dominated nose that feels a little sullen compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and nicely judged acidity. Fleshy with strawberry and red cherries toward the tart finish, this has good vigor and poise and I suspect will age well. I love the substance here and it represents one of the better wines of these Nuits Saint Georges premier cru.

Good dark red. Slightly jammy raspberry, chocolate and mocha on the nose, enlivened by mineral energy. Then silky and tangy on the palate, with a light herbal edge leavening the wine's sweetness. Ripe but nicely fresh flavors of red berries, spices and pepper lead to a crisp finish. This was 12.1% natural alcohol chaptalized to 12.6%, according to winemaker Jacques Devauges, who noted that "low alcohol in conjunction with good maturity of a wine's other elements gives drinkability."

The 2011 Nuits St.-Georges Clos de L’Arlot from Domaine de L’Arlot, shows what makes the best 2011 red Burgundys so appealing. Plush, open and resonant, the 2011 graces the palate with lovely depth and silkiness in the understated style of the year. This is a lovely showing for the 2011.

Mix of Gerbotte (50% planted 1984) and cooler, higher, steeper slopes (40+ years). 100% malolactic fermentation. 5% Pinot Beurot. Heady and rich and something California-like. Then fresh and tight and very youthful. Almost Condrieu on the nose and then very Côte d'Or on the palate. (JR)
