The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin is a pretty wine with striking purity in its aromas and flavors, but ultimately it comes across as a touch frail and fleeting. This is a case where I preferred the generosity of the 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. This is a striking set of wines from Christian Serafin. Medium red. Dark wild berries and smoke on the nose; this could only be from Gevrey. On the lean side in the mouth, with modest depth to the flavors of raspberry and game. Finishes with good length and surprising lift, yet the dark berry and smoked meat flavors seem a bit more advanced than usual at this age. (Serafin's 2008s had been racked but not sulfited when I tasted them from barrel in November.)
A bit obviously oaky. Some pretty fruit but it’s awfully drying on the finish. (JR)
