Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2011 from William Fèvre has a more open and expressive bouquet compared to others in the flight, allowing the limestone and flint. The palate is crisp and vibrant with good acidity, fine depth and tension, quite spicy with a slight resinous note coming through on the complex, slightly nutty finish. This is a more cerebral Chablis, rather mercurial in the glass, and for that reason an absorbing proposition.

The 2011 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre fleshes out nicely in the glass. In 2011 the Montee de Tonnerre is fairly immediate, with good up-front richness and creaminess, but less of the focus that elevates the best wines from this site. Slightly advanced nuances along with the wine's medium-bodied structure suggest the 2011 is a wine to drink over the next few years.

Pale green-yellow. Subtle aromas and flavors of lemon, grapefruit, fresh herbs, powdered stone and white pepper. Intensely flavored and gripping but in a rather closed phase today. Most impressive on the brisk, taut finish, which dusts the palate with citrus zest and wet stone. This will need at least a few years of patience.

50% aged 10-13 months in barrel. Inviting dusty citrus. More concentrated in the middle than the Montmains though less fragrant. Long minerally finish. (JH)
