Notes of reduction (a state in which the molecules that form the wine lack oxygen, recognized by burnt rubber or eraser aromas; this can most often be corrected by decanting) dominate the nose of the 2001 Riesling Spatlese Kaseler Nies'chen. Tightly wound (another trait of reduced wines), delicate, and focused, it displays appealing flavors of red cherries, lemons, and lime with considerable coaxing. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016. Very cool and restrained with a notably taut nose. Sulphur quite marked at this point. Good value but, at this stage anyway, not fun. (JR)
