The 1999 Viñedo Chadwick was the first vintage of this Cabernet Sauvignon from Punte Alto, Maipo, and contains a 6% dash of Carménère, aged for 18 months in new French barrels. Nineteen-nighty nine was a warm, dry year, and this comes out in the wine. Garnet red with a rich brick dust sheen. The evolved nose offers fig, caramel, licorice and ripe blackcurrant with herbal notes. In the mouth, it has excellent depth, but the reactive tannins are a touch dry, and it fades away a little toward the end. The finish brings aromas of dried leaves.

First vintage and the only one with any Carmenère. 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Carmen è re. TA 5.26 g/l, pH 3.7, RS 1.86 g/l. The vineyard around the family home had produced outstanding red grapes for decades, and Eduardo Chadwick, foreseeing the potential of this unique terroir, convinced his father to convert his beloved polo field into vineyards. In 1992, it was planted with 15 ha of Cabernet Sauvignon. Viñedo Chadwick is located 650 m above sea level at Puente Alto in the Maipo Valley. As a result of both the warm growing season and the low yields, the grapes achieved good sugar levels and ripe tannins in early April and were harvested about two weeks earlier than normal. The grapes were hand harvested in individual lots and gently crushed and fermented in their individual lots. Aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels. A definite step up in sophistication from Seña. The 6% Carmenère is not obvious although the fruit is slightly drying out. Sweet dusty start. Then well-melded fruit with good acid balance and tannins that have almost disappeared. Juicy and slightly simple finish. (JR)
