Tasting notes
Mid ruby with narrow orange rim. Restrained, noble, minerally nose. On the palate there is perfect balance between fruit, coating tannins and melting acidity, but on the whole this is still very closed. Built for eternity? Elegant mid-weight palate. (WS)

Scavino's 2006 Barolo Cannubi opens with an attractive, finely-knit bouquet that leads to an open, soft core of perfumed fruit. Rich, and expansive on the palate, this textured, vivid Barolo reveals terrific length on the palate and finessed tannins that inform the silky finish. Though medium in body, the wine packs plenty of punch and is almost certain to put on weight in the bottle.

This is a wonderful set of new wines from Enrico Scavino and his daughters Enrica and Elisa. The dark, almost impenetrable color of the 1990s is gone and these Barolos now look like Barolos. To be sure, Scavino’s wines are still characterized by a plushness and opulence of fruit that sets them apart. Yet all of these 2006 Barolos reveal exceptional length, beautifully balanced tannins and gorgeous overall harmony. They should be on anyone’s short list of must-have wines. The Barolos are fermented in stainless steel, undergo malolactic fermentation in French oak and are subsequently aged for a year in French oak barrels followed by a second year in cask. Good deep red. Captivating vibrant aromas of rose petal, minerals and licorice. Then penetrating, powerful and tightly wound on the palate, with a youthful austerity to the flavors of dark fruits and bitter chocolate. Lovely floral lift contributes to this precise wine's impression of energy. Finishes long, ripely tannic and very suave. Scavino has had an excellent vintage in 2006.
