The whiff of bruised apple on the nose indicates the full maturity, but time has done nothing to weaken the character of this remarkable wine which is still firmly structured, overwhelmingly mineral and focused. The length of this thing is staggering. Reminds me what a terrible shame the curse of premox is: collectors rarely get the chance to drink fully mature great white Burgundy any more. FINE+RARE

The 1990 Montrachet Grand Cru from Drouhin/Marquis de Laguiche has an attractive medicinal, Benedictine-tinged bouquet, subtle clementine and pineapple scents emerging with time. The palate is well balanced, but perhaps because of the heat that summer, it lacks the tension of some of the better vintages I have encountered. Then again, it is easy to become smitten by the honeyed, slightly viscous finish. A delicious if not intellectual Montrachet. Tasted at La Paulée in Beaune.

Joseph Drouhin is one of the largest and most famous producers in Burgundy, making both domaine and négociant wines. It remains family-owned and run, now in the hands of the fourth generation.
