A ripe and notably somber but attractively spicy nose blends both red and blue berry fruit with earth nuances that can also be found on the rich, round, supple and refined medium-bodied tobacco and tar-suffused flavors that possess excellent, if not truly special, depth and length on the dusty, sappy and ever-so-mildly austere finish. However, like the Clos de Vougeot, it just feels as though there is more here than is presently being reflected and again, my score reflects this optimism that it will surface in time.

The 2009 Clos St. Denis is big and powerful yet also totally impeccable in its elegance. The Clos St. Denis shows gorgeous inner perfume and striking depth in its aromas and flavors. A beautifully nuanced, well articulated finish rounds things out in style. This is high class juice. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. I tasted an impressive range of wines with Jacques Lardiere and his successor Frederic Barnier, who is slated to take over when Lardiere retires at the end of 2012. Jadot makes a mind-bending number of wines, but I limited myself to the best 35 or so examples. In 2009 Jadot began harvesting on September 6. All of the reds were made from 100% destemmed fruit. Maceration times varied from wine to wine, but according to Lardiere all of the wines were made with essentially the same approach. Lardiere is another of the producers who compares 2009 to 1959, and believes the wines will age well because of their density of fruit and minerality. Many of the estate’s own vineyards are farmed biodynamically, but of course Jadot also sources a significant amount of wine from other growers that is not necessarily from biodynamically farmed vineyards. Although there is a slight dustiness on the nose, with further aeration one find dark cherry, bergamot and cranberry leaf mixed with a touch of orange rind. The palate has a racy finish that moves into a middle with good depth and grip, finally a citrus-driven finish that is perfectly tuned. Excellent. (NM)
Tight, closed, floral and red cherry just peeping through, loads of length and vigour to the flavour. Certainly a keeper. Impressive, almost show-stopping. (RH)

Louis Jadot is arguably the most consistent négociant house in Burgundy. It has managed to straddle both the entry-level and fine wine market, while retaining respect in both.
