Score 87/100 · Drink 2000-2008, Robert Parker, Aug 2000

The dark ruby/garnet-colored 1995 Brunello di Montalcino displays a spice box, cedar, damp forest, soy, red currant, and cherry-scented nose, but comes across as a bit austere, angular, and excessively structured for its concentration level. It should drink well for 7-8 years, but the tannin level is worrisome vis a vis the wine's concentration. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200

Brilliant garnet, the classic color of sangiovese with long cask aging. Very open and expressive on the nose, showing lovely pinot-ish delicacy and fresh strawberry and raspberry fruit. Round and warm on the palate, with focused, stylish fruit and energizing acidity. Quite elegant, and fresh on the back end. True to the vintage-the coolness of September is felt in the finesse of the wine. Except for Gianfranco Soldera, no one in Montalcino has made better wines than Diego Molinari over the past 15 years; there hasn't been a hesitation or misstep since the 1982 vintage.
