Good deep red. Medicinal dark cherry, leather and earth on the nose. Fatter and silkier on entry than the Pruliers, then quite sappy and firm, with dark raspberry, mineral, dark chocolate and menthol flavors. Here the dusty tannins are quite even and also hit the palate late. Finishes with strong, fresh fruit and excellent aromatic persistence. Very typical Vaucrains in its power but this wine is less locked up today than the Pruliers. Gouges notes that a percentage of ten-year-old vines adds a softer, more feminine element to this otherwise powerful wine (1996 was the last vintage made entirely with old vines).

Good dark red. Raspberry, chocolate and minerals on the pure, complex nose. Silky, broad and sweet but with the sappiness of the vintage's better examples. Firm but harmonious acidity frames and intensifies the dark fruit flavors. Conveys a strong impression of soil character. This firmly tannic, impeccably balanced wine will no doubt require six or seven years of bottle aging.
