Score 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2006

Impressively dark, saturated red-ruby. Brooding aromas of black plum and minerals. Large-scaled, broad, sweet and rich; chewy, layered and three-dimensional. This is stuffed with fruit and quite full in the mouth. Here the tannins are nicely supported by material and thus a bit less rude, making their presence felt much later. Chevillon describes this as a monster.

Candied blackberries, plums, and blueberries make up the aromatic profile of the 2003 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Cailles. Medium-bodied, firm, and tannic, this wine demands cellaring. Its flavor profile, dominated by red cherries and raspberries, reveals admirable depth. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2014.

Bright red-ruby. Crushed raspberry, smoke and damp earth on the nose; extremely ripe for this cuvee Then dense and fine-grained, with rich flavors of black cherry, black raspberry and chocolate. Comes across as less sweet today than the Pruliers, Perrieres and Roncieres. Offers a bit less finesse and detail than usual for this wine.

Cask sample. Deep purplish crimson. Very slightly overripe on the nose. Needs just a little more freshness. Quite rich and fruity and round. Lots of spice and fruit. The most accessible tannins of these Nuits St-Georges. (JR)
