Ruby-red. Superripe but wonderfully vinous aromas of currant, mocha and minerals; still, this is less expressive today than the Charmes. Incredibly dense, lush and concentrated, with a sappy character but also more evidence of surmaturite than the Charmes. This is 1947-like in its sheer creamy intensity and mid-palate thickness of fruit and extract. I initially preferred the Charmes for its lift, but this seemed to grow fresher and more explosively fruity as it opened in the glass.

Waxy black cherries, blackberries, and chocolate make up the nose of the sensually-textured 2003 Griotte-Chambertin. Medium to full-bodied and expansive, this broad, deep, forward effort slathers the palate with lush blackberries and cherries whose effects linger in its long, engaging finish. Drink this sexy beauty over the next 8-9 years. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083

Bright ruby-red. More vibrant, minerally nose shows good peppery and stony lift. Penetrating and minerally in the mouth, with the most verve of these 2003s. Superripe but with a more restrained sweetness. Finishes extremely long, with a whiplash of coffee and mocha flavor. Quite different in shape from the Charmes. This seems rather 1990-like. Offers great potential.

Here the aromas are in a different register with much higher-toned, much less earthy aromas that seem to be the distilled essence of red pinot fruit followed by slightly toasty but velvety flavors which are fine, pure and exceptionally well-detailed. This is more concentrated than the Charmes and finishes with a hint of torrefaction. Allen Meadows, Burghound Jan, 2005
