This dark, ruby/purple wine from this famous fortified chateau is indicative of a higher level of quality emerging from this perennial underachiever. The 2012 exhibits nice, sweet black cherry, strawberry and currant fruit and spicy oak, earth and spice. It is elegant, medium-bodied and best drunk over the next 12-14 years. Kudos to proprietor Jean-Jacques de Bethmann for upgrading the performance of this estate.
Pungent and arresting on the nose. Lots of both fruit and definition even if it is relatively open already. Classic Léognan style. (JR)
Pale greenish gold. Very lively with greenish vegetation hints. Racy and sinewy. This manages to be both appetising and deep flavoured. Good tension and raciness. So clean and fresh! (JR)
About the producer
Ch. Olivier is one of the few actual castles in Bordeaux – coming with a moat and drawbridge. Since Alexandre de Bethmann took over here in 2012, the château has been given a new lease of life, with quality on the rise.
