(100% new oak): Deep red-ruby. Profound, multidimensional nose melds primary dark berries, licorice pastille, spices and soil tones. Highly concentrated and taut, with more than enough dark fruit intensity to balance the wine's strong saline minerality. A whiplash of acidity on the back half gives this remarkably chewy wine the tautness of a 2010. Really resounds and builds on the back end, which features extremely suave tannins and great refinement. This is balanced from the start but will be even better a decade from now.

Next to the Bèze, the 2012 Chambertin comes across as earthy, with plenty of sweet tobacco, autumn leave, dried herb and spice notes. There is good lift and perfume in the glass, although stylistically the Chambertin is quite a bit more savory and less overt than the Bèze. Iron and a host of ferrous notes add complexity on the powerful, slightly austere finish.
About the producer
Based in Meursault and farming some of the finest vineyards in the Côte de Beaune, Henri Boillot is a leading address in Burgundy. He crafts fine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but the estate is best known for its flagship monopole vineyard, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos de la Mouchère.
