Very ripe but restrained aromas of apricot and caramelly oak. Then dry and dense in the mouth, with noteworthy concentration and freshness for the vintage. This was initially dominated by vanillin oak, but a brisk pineapple flavor emerged with aeration. Finishes very long and subtle. Martin notes that this material has the power to absorb the wood, and points out that this wine always gets 100% new barriques .

(this finished its malolactic fermentation earlier than the other 2003s and had been sulfured) Pure aromas of minerals, iodine and clove. Fat, full and creamy but with surprising freshness and verve. The wine's iodine and menthol components give it cut. Impressively dense, thick and long. The yield here was down 20% and there was little surmaturite, whereas crop levels in the rest of the estate's vineyards were off by more like 40%.
