Greenish tinge. Big, alcoholic nose with smoke and slightly oily notes. Very big and round. Still quite simple with aggressive acidity. Extremely youthful. The sweetness is very slightly too dominant (pace Abbé Arnoux) for the wine to be completely convincing as a great wine – at the moment anyway. It just lacks the savoury undertow of the greatest. The outstanding 1999 Montrachet reveals toast, stone, and white flower aromas. This medium-bodied wine expands on the palate to display copious quantities of minerals, fresh pears, apples, and spices. It is extremely focused, almost laser-like, and penetrating. It coats the palate with its flavors and has an exceptionally long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012. Importer: Frederick Wildman & Sons, New York, NY; tel (212) 355-0700.
