Another highlight of the evening. Lots of minerality on the nose–dried stone, herbs, spices – complex aromas. The minerality continues on the palate as the fruit flavours become more earthy / stony. Awesome breadth on the palate, great energy surge. Rich and ripe with fantastic acidity brilliantly integrated and framing the mineral fruit palate. Fully mature, starts to fade in the glass.

The 1978 Musigny Grand Cru from Drouhin is a vintage that I have encountered just once before. This bottle has a light, open and quite earthy bouquet with brown spices and leather. It shows more freshness than some of its peers. The palate is crisp and fresh with more black than red fruit. There are hints of tobacco and dried blood, as I observed on the previous bottles six years ago, though this example is a tad more astringent on the finish. Still, this is a very good showing. Tasted at the 1978 Bouilland horizontal.

The 1978 Musigny Grand Cru has an attractive bouquet of red cherries, licorice, desiccated orange peel and morels, all effervescent and instantly attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins that exert a gentle grip. This is beautifully balanced and sensual in style, and very harmonious; hints of dried blood and bitter orange mix with balsamic and tobacco on the convincingly persistent finish. Superb. Tasted at the Drouhin Musigny vertical in London.
