The 2002 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru from Dugat-Py is hauntingly good, wafting from the glass with a bouquet of kaleidoscopic complexity, aromas of wild berries, potpourri and peony mingling with subtle bass notes of grilled venison and rich soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its tannins fine-grained and velvety and its acids cool and succulent, a creamy, voluminous attack giving way to a precise, brightly focused finish of immense length. The inherent elegance of the 2002 vintage synergies with the rather wild and "sauvage" terroir of Mazis-Chambertin to brilliant effect, and though this is a bit more reserved than the 2002 Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin that was served alongside it, the Mazis already makes for very suave, stylish drinking.

Deep red-ruby. Strikingly vibrant nose offers candied blackberry, violet, spices and sexy oak tones, with a touch of cinders. Wonderfully silky and sweet but youthful, conveying terrific lift and a light touch to the flavors of black cherry, boysenberry and spices. This is still a baby but the tannins are noble. Critics of this estate complain that the young wines are too dark and extractive but this grand cru is evolving beautifully, albeit at a snail's pace.

Good medium ruby. Distinctly wilder aromas of small black fruits, roasted meat, coffee, leather and smoke; conveys a strong impression of soil. Like liquid silk in the mouth, with pure, precise flavors of blackberry, blueberry and game. Wonderfully layered and concentrated, and currently hiding its tightly coiled spring. Finishes with great length and hints of violet and caramel. A connoisseur's wine.
