Score 91-93/100 · Drink 2010-2020, Pierre Rovani, Aug 2005

Freshly cracked black pepper, asphalt, licorice, and coffee are found in the aromatic profile of the 2003 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Pruliers. This powerful, medium to full-bodied wine slathers the palate with thick coats of liquid blackness as well as copious ripe tannin. Highly structured, dense, and thick, its brooding, leathery flavor profile comes across more as a mass of darkness at this stage than as individual flavor components (time will bring definition). Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020+. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

Good saturated red-ruby color. Fruitier aromas of red berries, cherry, minerals and leather. Suave on entry, then minerally and tight, with hints of iodine and sloe berry. Tight, dry and classic, with firm tannins and good length. This shows the vineyard as much as the year, but will require several years of bottle aging.

Cask sample. Deep crimson. Sweet, spicy nose. Definitely 'cool' on the front of the palate. Very restrained. Correct. A beginning, middle, and end. No excesses. This tastes as though the vines are very old and very comfortable. Assured, but will this take on weight? Definitely a bit sullen at the moment. (JR)
