The 2002 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is slightly lighter in hue than Roumier’s other 2002s at the moment. It has a lovely piquancy on the nose with squashed rose petals combining nicely with crushed stone, almost flint-like scents that filter through the red fruit. The palate is fresh with slightly more obdurate tannin than the 2002 Bonnes-Mares, quite spicy towards the second half with a silky smooth finish that just needs a little more length. Very fine, if not the finest Charmes-Chambertin that Christophe has produced. Tasted blind at the Roumier dinner in Hong Kong.

(Mazoyeres now appears underneath Charmes on the label) Palish red. Complex, musky aromas of roasted fruits, rose petal, mushroom and game. Concentrated, smooth and rather open-knit, with an enticing floral character. Hasn't yet closed down following the bottling; in fact, this delivers considerable charm. In a distinctly gentle style, but finishes with lovely length.

In order to help consumers understand the provenance of his Charmes-Chambertin, Christophe Roumier has added “En Mazoyeres” to his 2002, clearly indicating that it is from the Mazoyeres-Chambertin vineyard (a strange law allows wines from Mazoyeres to be called Charmes). It bursts from the glass with stupendous, mouth-watering aromas of kirsch, candied cherries, perfume, flowers, and Asian spices. On the palate it is silky-textured, lush, medium-bodied, and sweet. Its suave flavor profile reveals loads of forward red fruit notes that linger in its long, ripe tannin-packed finish. Projected maturity: 2006-2013.
