Dujac's 2012 Charmes-Chambertin, usually one of the more generous wines in the range, is totally closed today. Elements of reduction presently mask much of the exuberance I sensed in the Charmes when I last tasted it from barrel. There is plenty of energy in the glass, but the Charmes clearly needs time in bottle to come together. The only question is really how much. This was much more impressive from barrel. Let's hope the wine is going through an awkward phase. Dujac's Charmes is a blend of fruit from Charmes and Mazoyères.

Bright red-ruby. A touch of reduction to the aromas of musky raspberry, smoke, minerals and rose petal. Firmly built and rather powerful, showing excellent definition to its assertive, chewy flavors of dark raspberry and bitter chocolate. Finishes with lush, even tannins and the structure to support a graceful evolution in bottle.

(two-thirds Charmes and one-third Mazoyeres): Good bright, dark red. Medicinal red cherry, gibier and sexy new oak on the distinctly wild nose. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, with good floral lift to the red berry flavors. The new-oaky quality carries through on the palate. In a rather robust style for Charmes-Chambertin but with no shortage of energy.
