The medium to dark ruby-colored 1997 Charmes-Chambertin is a hedonism addict's dream wine. Its blackberry and Asian spice-laden nose leads to a mouth full of palate-saturating black cherries, coffee, ice cream, and loads of sweet spices. This suave, rich, immensely dense, thick, and intense wine is broad and full-bodied. Projected maturity: now-2006+. Excellent ruby-red. Reticent but perfumed aromas of violet and black cherry. Sweet and dense in the mouth; has a thickness but avoids heaviness. Much finer than the last sample; in fact, this is quite stylish. This is never a particularly powerful style, says Geantet "except for the '93." Nicely integrated acidity. Very long, subtle aftertaste offers silky tannins and noteworthy grip for the vintage.
