Dark red cherries, menthol, smoke, tar, licorice and game emerge from the 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna di Pianrosso Santa Caterina d'Oro. A surprisingly dark and tannic wine with little of the vintage 2007 sexiness, the Riserva is a bit of a mystery today. There is plenty of depth and power in the glass, but less in the way of finesse. I am not sure if the tannins will soften before the fruit begins to fade.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna di Pianrosso Santa Caterina d'Oro is big, rich and seamless. The wine had just been bottled the day of my visit, but it is very promising, even at this early stage.

Paolo Bianchini’s 2007 Brunelli are quite a bit better than the 2006s. One of the recent evolutions at Ciacci has been Bianchini’s desire to make an entry-level Brunello that is more affordable than his wines have been in the past, hence a greater separation in terms of quality and price between the straight Brunello and the Pianrosso. "A red with sliced meat, dark chocolate, berry and spice. Full body, silky tannins and a tangy finish. A harmonious and beautiful wine. This is so layered and fabulous. So wonderful. These Riserva Brunellos from Ciacci are always phenomenal. Drink now."
