The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark ruby/purple-colored wine made in a soft, supple, forward style. The flavors are tasty but the wine narrows out in the finish. The good news is that the best is yet to come from Abeja. I tasted barrel samples of a 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. The 2005 Cabernet blows away the 2004, and the 2005 Reserve is even better. The winery has 32 acres of estate vineyards in the Walla Walla AVA, and starting with the 2005 vintage, an increasing amount of the production will come from those vines. Tel. Bright ruby-red. Black fruit and mocha aromas are a bit more sharply focused than those of the merlot. Then delineated and spicy but less forthcoming in the mouth; still youthfully tight, with the oak showing today. Intriguing lavender florality lifts the finish. Give this one a couple years before pulling the cork.
