One of the bigger wines in this range, the 2010 Pinot Noir Meredith Estate is laced with dark cherries, plums, tobacco, cloves and chocolate. My sense is that the oak is too dominant here, so the fruit is a bit masked. This is still a pretty wine, but in my view not quite at the level of the best Pinots here.

Bright saturated red with ruby highlights. Almost liqueur-like ripeness to the aromas of dark cherry, black raspberry and dark chocolate, complicated by mocha, cola and underbrush. Densely packed and superconcentrated; the closest to liqueur-like of these 2010 pinots, showing serious weight in the mouth and brooding dark fruit and soil flavors. Finishes with chewy, dusty tannins but also terrific sweetness and breadth. Like the Flax Vineyard and Klopp Ranch wines, this one was vinified with a portion of whole clusters.

I hadn’t tasted Merry Edwards’ wines in a few years, so it was great to get reacquainted with one of my favorite Russian River properties. This year, I was especially impressed with the appellation Pinots, which are the wines I would focus on, as the vineyard-designates aren’t always meaningfully better. Tel. (707) 823-7466
