For his village Chablis, Samuel Billaud blends three plots – two on the Left Bank with one on the Right Bank. The resulting wine feels restrained after the Petit Chablis, not yet offering quite as much, but it’s gorgeously pure and mineral, a wine that screams of its origin. Chalky, balanced and tight now, but set to offer more in bottle.

Very close to the Petit Chablis, this seems to have a tad less power and fleshiness, but a more prominent line of acidity and minerality. Both are great examples and I’d be delighted to drink either. Ripe lemon fruit a bit more to the fore than with the slightly more tropical Petit Chablis. Classic style. Great purity. (AWH)
Samuel Billaud’s 2024 Chablis Village opens in the glass with notes of orange peel, beeswax and pastry. The medium-bodied palate is racy and incisive, concluding with a long, chalky finish.
A slightly riper, if otherwise similar nose precedes bigger-bodied flavors that also possess excellent punch and detail while exuding evident minerality on the dry, balanced and lingering finale that is just a bit more complex. This too is excellent for its level and very much worth checking out. Top-value. Drink 2028+

Samuel Billaud started making wine under his own name in 2009, but he is one of the most experienced producers in Chablis, having made wine in the region since 1985.
