Score 92/100 · Drink 2013-2020, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jun 2011

The 2000 Barolo Cannubi possesses notable density and intensity from start to finish. It shows more fruit and textural richness than the Costa Grimaldi, which is surprising given that Cannubi often suffers more in warm years. This is another wine that has developed very nicely.

Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020. Einaudi’s 2000 Baroli have held up well. The estate’s winemaking philosophy was a bit different this period. Fermentation and maceration lasted 15 days, quite a bit less than is the norm these days. The wines saw 70% new oak, the first year in barrique, the second in cask.

The 2000 Barolo Cannubi, which has finally shed the excessive oakiness of past vintages, features resin, chocolate, roses, and spice in its gamut of aromas, long and velvety flavors, and very good density and depth. Drink: 2005-2018. Einaudi is a name to reckon with in Italy – Luigi Einaudi, whose family still owns these vineyards, was a widely esteemed economist and one of the first presidents of Italy in the post-war period. The wines have taken a substantial leap in quality since the mid-1990s with the assistance of oenologist Beppe Caviola, and this is an excellent group. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. Deep, bright red. Aromas of red fruits and flowers, with an intriguing balsamic element. More vibrant and energetic than the Costa Grimaldi, showing the best inner-mouth perfume of the trio of 2000s. Dense and juicy, with a rather sophisticated fine-grained texture. The tannins are finer as well, and hit the palate later. (Empson U.S.A. Alexandria VA
