The 2009 Pinot Noir Canary Hill Vineyard sports an alluring nose of cedar, spice box, rose petal, cherry, and raspberry. In the glass it reveals ample savory fruit but comes up a bit lacking in depth and concentration, a common issue in the 2009 vintage. Ken Wright Cellars’ 2009 Pinot Noirs range from excellent to outstanding in quality but generally lack the structure, density, and richness of the great 2008 vintage. These are pretty, elegant wines to drink while the 2008s continue to fill out in the cellar. Tel. (503) 852-7070; www.kenwrightcellars.com

Deep, bright red. Smoky cherry and dark berries on the nose, with a touch of musky underbrush adding complexity. Sappy and nicely concentrated, offering bitter cherry, black raspberry and rose pastille flavors lifted by gentle acidity. Finishes with lingering smokiness, youthfully firm tannins and good tangy cut. Give this a little air or some more time in bottle.
