Score 92/100 · Drink 2016-2024, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jun 2016

(13.7% alcohol; this wine was vinified by Heidi Barrett at Grace Family Vineyards): Bright medium ruby-red. High-pitched aromas of cassis, violet, licorice, bitter chocolate, cedar and cardamom, plus a whiff of leather; smells a lot younger than 20 years old. Plush, ripe and sweet in the mouth, with flavors of cassis, cocoa powder and spices nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Finishes brisk, suave and persistent, with fine-grained tannins nicely supported by saline extract. Very well-judged extraction here--not to mention strong starting material.

Aged in 100% new French oak casks for 22 months before bottling, the 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a dark ruby color, followed by a sweet, aggressively woody nose. The pungent wood dominated the wine's fruit, which lowered my score. Nevertheless, once past the oaky overlay, the wine exhibits fine ripeness, copious quantities of rich, chewy fruit, medium to full body, and wood tannin in the finish. I am not sure if everything will ultimately come together, but this is a flamboyant, oaky, spicy Cabernet Sauvignon that requires 2-4 more years of cellaring; it should keep for 15-20 years. This vineyard's innovative name, and beautiful presentation in a heavy, tall Italian bottle make for a grandiose impression. Based on the two vintages I tasted, the wine is excellent. Tel. Superripe, sappy nose combines blackcurrant, chocolate and brown spices. Sweet, supple and chewy on the palate; already displays expressive inner-mouth aromatics. A fairly big wine, finishing with excellent length and thoroughly buffered tannins. Faint notes of roast coffee and game on the aftertaste.
