The 2013 Zinfandel 101 Vineyard is gorgeous in the way it brings together supple radiant fruit, expressive aromatics and terrific balance, all in an understated, refined style built on finesse. Nothing in particular stands out. Instead, it is the wine's overall balance that really speaks loud and clear.

From a vineyard planted in the 1920s in a tiny site of only 2.5 acres, the 2013 Zinfandel Vineyard 101 from Alexander Valley is a wine that Larry Turley has been making for many, many years and which I think dates to when I first tasted with him in the mid-1990s. Notes of zesty raspberry and black cherry fruit, currants, peppery spice and earth are all present in this beautiful, medium to full-bodied, strikingly laser-like and precise Zinfandel. It carries its 15.9% natural alcohol elegantly and well-concealed beneath its luxurious fruit and texture. This is one of the most finesse-styled and ethereal Zinfandels in the Turley portfolio in 2013.

The 2013 Zinfandel 101 Vineyard is all about texture, power and exuberance. Black cherries, plums, smoke, licorice, smoke, leather, cedar and tobacco race across the palate. This is one of the more ample, explosive wines in the range. There is a sense of immediacy here that is impossible to miss. A dollop of Carignane round out the blend.
