The 2003 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto has quite a bit more breadth and volume than the straight Barolo Falletto, but at the same time the intense, forward personality of the year is more evident. The classic Giacosa perfume struggles to emerge, but the ripeness of the vintage remains very much in evidence. The tannins are a bit firm, but they will only intensify as the fruit fades, so the 2003 is best enjoyed before that sets in.

Surprisingly fresher than the Asili from the same vintage. Loads of fruit and velvety tannins with a delicate raisin and dried strawberry character. Very long finish. Drink this now, it is very gulpable at the moment.
I was surprised to see the 2003 show so well. It was terrific.
(Giacosa produced no riserva bottlings in 2003) Good medium red. Reticent, brooding nose suggests menthol and mocha. In a distinctly closed and tougher style, with fairly vibrant currant, mocha and menthol flavors currently cut off by firm tannins. This makes the 2003 Asili appear lush and open by comparison. But this rather classically styled Barolo is still a baby.
About the producer
Bruno Giacosa – now run by daughter Bruna – is a cult Nebbiolo producer, that has consistently made some of the best single-vineyard Barbaresco and Barolo from the 1960s onwards. The“red-label” Riservas are some of the finest and most collectable wines in Italy.
