The 2013 Syrah Estate offers up the typical Stolpman Syrah palette of dark flavors, but with a bit more cut and overall energy from the greater diurnal shifts that characterized the growing season. Graphite, smoke, black cherry, plum and menthol are all pushed forward in this tasty, richly textured Syrah from Stolpman.

Stolpman's 2013 Syrah Estate is juicy and expressive, with plenty of Mediterranean herbs, dried flowers, black cherries and underbrush. A wine of real personality and character, the Estate captures the essence of what makes Ballard Canyon Syrahs so compelling; which is to say an interplay of dense fruit with expressive varietal aromatics. The Estate is made mostly from young vines, with about 50% whole clusters. This is my favorite of the Stolpman Syrahs. Some of the other selections are bigger and more powerful, but the Estate has, in my view, the best overall balance.

The largest production cuvee, the 2013 Syrah Estate is a terrific value that has loads to love. Medium-bodied, fresh and elegant, with notable yet fine tannin, it gives up pretty notes of blackberry, ground pepper, chalky minerality and smoked meats. Buy it by the case and drink it over the coming 4-5 years.

Half whole cluster. Fermented and aged in concrete. Dusty, dark fruit aromatics and flavour with accents of violet and spice with light herbal notes. Nice purity. Stimulating, energetic palate. Tactile tannins. Pleasing mouthfeel. Nice tension. Really delicious. (ECB)
