Score 92/100 · Drink 2016-2025, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, May 2016

Tasted at the Château Siran vertical at the property, the 1947 Château Siran was clear in colour, with moderate bricking on the rim, yet lucid. The bouquet is very fragrant. Even without approaching the glass, scents of mulberry, morels, kirsch and blood orange waft from the glass. The precision and sensuality of this bouquet is absolutely divine. The palate is medium-bodied with just a touch of volatility on the entry (not uncommon with respect to this hot vintage), however, it is backed up by plenty of decayed red berry fruit, tertiary notes and leather. The acidity is surprisingly piercing for a 1947; moreover it does not quite gel like the best wines I have tasted from this vintage. However, there is harmony to this Margaux, still plenty of vigor and a sense of weight towards the finish that renders it very enjoyable. Not a profound 1947, but a delicious and thoroughly enjoyable wine that should be consumed over the next decade. Tasted February 2016.

About the producer

Ch. Siran
Siran

In the south of Margaux, this property has 36 hectares of vines. There’s an unusually large proportion of Petit Verdot (13%) in the vineyard, something which the team feels adds finesse, concentration and a spicy finish to the wine.
