Score 90/100 · Drink 2020-2026, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Dec 2019

Bright dark red with ruby highlights. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, earth, menthol and medicinal herbs, plus a whiff of leather. Plush, round and classically dry on the palate, conveying a slight warmth to the flavors of redcurrant, wild strawberry, tobacco leaf and wild herbs. This wine starts out unmistakably Sangiovese on the nose, then shows Syrah hints of iodine and fresh blood toward the back, where serious tannins are in harmony with the wine's fruit. (14.9% alcohol; aged in 55% new French oak)

The 2016 Saggi is a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Syrah that begins with a red-fruited core on the nose of soft sour cherry and delicate florals with a dusty focus. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, the wine is structured with bright acidity that lifts the mid-palate with subtle savory herbs and spices. The lingering finish is well-balanced and has a good grip of dusty tannins that will evolve nicely in years to come. Only 2,110 cases made.

Aromas of graphite and dark berries abound in this blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and syrah. The palate has a deeply fleshy dark-berry core with a wealth of ripe and sweetly succulent dark berries. Impressive, seamless style here. Drink over the next decade.

The 2016 Red Wine SAGGI is mostly Sangiovese but has 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Syrah. Medium ruby-colored, with notes of ripe cherries, spice box, and dried flowers, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, present yet ripe, polished tannins, terrific balance, and a clean, graceful finish. It’s certainly one of the best expressions of Sangiovese coming from Washington. The talented Gilles Nicault continues to manage this estate and all its different cuvées brilliantly. The key factor to understand with these wines is that each is made with consulting advice from a different winemaker. Hence, the style of each is unique, yet the quality is top notch.
