Tasting notes
The 1989 Barolo Riserva Villero is a bit of an anomaly as only of the estate's two plots was used. The purest and silkiest of tannins frame the fruit beautifully from start to finish. This, too, oozes with class and personality in its expressive aromatics and well-delineated fruit. As wonderful as the 1989, it is a touch light for the year and probably not destined for an eternal life in the cellar.

Medium ruby. Vietti's 1989 Villero come across as much more modern. It offers a nose of spcies and vanilla followed by very sweet, concentrated fruit with good length and a very long finish. Some of the meatier flavors suggest a mature Barolo, but the wine's austere, somewhat lean personality make me think a few more years of aging will be beneficial. This seems to have been caught at an awkward stage in its evolution, but it seems to offer some outstanding potential.
