A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Ciel De Cheval Vineyard comes from a great vineyard on the lower slopes of Red Mountain and was aged in 50% new French oak. Cassis candied violets, spicy wood, and chocolate notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, plenty of classic Red Mountain minerality, fine yet building tannins, and a great finish. Give it just a few years and enjoy over the following 10-15 years.

Dusty and floral, the 2021 Red Wine Ciel du Cheval blossoms in the glass with a spicy blend of mentholated blackberries, savory herbs, cedar dust and clove. This is soft textured and more lifted than expected, with rose-tinged red fruits and minerals that give way to a building mass of grippy tannins toward the close. The 2021 tapers off structured and long, leaving the palate clenched with youthful poise and a slight bitter tinge. I find myself craving more depth and substance to balance these imposing tannins. Give this time.
