Tasting notes
Very dark crimson with some evolution at the rim. Extremely hedonistic nose. Full, round and ripe. Nice little edge of pepper. Very positive and vigorous. Lots of sweetness on the front palate with neat, dry tannins and no excess of alcohol. Promising for the long term. (JR)

An under-rated producer, Smith-Woodhouse has turned out a port with an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color. This powerful port is moderately sweet, forward, rich, and full-bodied, with nicely integrated alcohol and tannin. While it is not one of the vintage's blockbusters, it should be ready to drink in 3-5 years and keep for 15-20. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2018. Importer: Premium Ports and Madeiras, Sausalito, CA; tel. (415) 331-7656
Emits wonderful aromas of crushed fruits, especially berries. Medium-bodied and very sweet with fine tannins and sweet fruit flavors on the finish. An elegant, young vintage Port for relatively early consumption. Best after 2000. 9,000 cases made. – James Suckling , Wine Spectator 1997
