Score 90/100 · Drink 2012-2022, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Aug 2012

Meanwhile, the 2001 Gran Reserva, aged in American oak for 48 months, has a lifted minty bouquet reminiscent of mature Right Bank Bordeaux! The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins. It is more youthful than the 2001Reserva, but without perhaps the same charm and personality. It has the substance to suggest it will age over the next decade. Drink now-2022. Bodegas Hermanos Pecina was established in 1992 in La Sonsierra in Rioja Alta by Pedro Pecina Crespo, and the small winery owns fifty hectares of its own vine. Although some of the wines did not quite make the grade, there are several that are definitely worth seeking out as fine examples of modern style Rioja, while the late release 2001s fit more into the “classic” Rioja category.
