Tasting notes
Made from 100% Syrah that saw one-third stems and 18 months in neutral oak, the 2017 Syrah Angeli reveals a deep purple color to go with pure, powerful notes of blackberries, ground pepper, lavender, and violets. Rich, medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, and balanced, it shows the more straight, focused style of the vintage and will benefit from short-term cellaring.

The 2017 Syrah Angeli is done in a style that emphasizes fruit richness and texture, along with greater oak influence. There is plenty of depth and intensity, and yet I find the Angeli less heavily extracted than in the past, which is a very good thing, as this fruit has plenty of natural richness itself. Although the Angelis is not especially varietal, it does have plenty to offer.
Deep ruby-purple colored, the 2017 Angeli Syrah has a wonderfully open, lush nose of blueberry and boysenberry jam, warm red and black currants, chocolate-covered cherries, pink peppercorn, graphite and pipe tobacco plus fried herbs, salami and smoke. Full-bodied, it floods the mouth with ripe fruits, fleshing slowly into herbs and meaty hints, with wonderfully ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and layered. Wow! 400 cases were made.
