The 1999 Lagrange was picked from 21 September until 4 October. I am disappointed on the nose here: smudged and monotonous compared to previous bottles. The palate is sweet on the entry with fleshy red fruit, low acidity for the vintage with meaty red berry fruit laced with thyme and sage towards the finish. It just feels one-dimensional and the nose seems to have fallen apart. Tasted at the Lagrange vertical at the estate.

Light and fragrant. No jagged edges. Light but elegant and very well balanced. But don't go here for the thrill of a lifetime. Good aromatic evolution but still quite chewy tannins. (JR)
Good bright medium ruby. Full-blown, expressive nose combines spiced black plum and strong torrefaction notes of smoke, coffee and mocha. Offers lovely freshness in the mouth, with flavors of dark berries and flowers enlivened by juicy acidity. Easy to drink now owing to its fine tannins, but this attractive midweight should offer another eight to ten years of pleasure. "More fruity and estery than the '97, which is a bit more classical," opines Ducasse. This wine includes a relatively high 17% petit verdot.
Mid-crimson. Jaggedly taut. Awkward. A bit gawky. (JR)
