The 2021 Pinot Noir Nash Mill Vineyard offers a grip of mineral, with violet undertones and appealing layers of berry and forest. From a dry vintage and high-elevation site impacted by the close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the tannins are long and firm, with a fair amount of concentration and complex structure providing weight that contrasts well against the fresh underlying acidity. Enjoy now through 2031. With several exciting estate properties and a relatively new wine brand, Wentworth was started by Katie and Mark X. Wentworth, who purchased the Abel and Nash Mill Vineyards in Anderson Valley’s Deep End just 10 to 12 miles from the ocean, sites that were first planted in 1997 and 2003. Wentworth started planting the Wentworth Vineyard on Mendocino Ridge next to Drew in 2015, a year after buying the property. Amidst Douglas fir, pines, madrones, and tan oaks are small blocks of organic and regenerative Pinot Noir growing between 1,200 and 1,260-feet elevation just 3.5 miles from the ocean. Mark makes the wines with technical director Emma Kudritzki Hall.

A mix of clones 115, 667, 943 and a little Pommard 5 fermented with ambient yeasts and 35% whole clusters. Aged for 11 months in 45% new, 27.5% second-fill and 27.5% neutral barrels. Racked twice. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 183 cases produced. Smells of brown sugar, cranberries and cherries. Flavours of cranberry and raspberry mix with dried herbs and dried citrus peel. Powdery, fleecy tannins coat the mouth as dried herbs and dried flowers linger in the finish. Excellent acidity. (AY)
