Tasting notes
The 2022 Ried Steinertal Riesling Smaragd shows a typically clear, bright, cool, spicy and dense Riesling/apricot nose with defined fruit and flesh. It is dense and juicy on the palate but also complex and enormously salty yet somewhat phenolic and slightly stressed toward the end. It has a salty finish and is full of character but needs a little more time to develop further. Tasted at Schloss Dürnstein, Wachau, in September 2023.

Unterloiben. Terraced south-facing slope 309 m from the Danube. Sloping 27–62%. Poor sandy soil over weathered gneiss. Deep and rich with such lovely pure citrus intensity and an attractive minor smoky note (a positive hint of reduction?). Full and intense in the mouth and still beautifully fresh. Extreme purity with moderate concentration. Mouth-wateringly long finish. (JH)
