Score 92/100 · Drink 2018-2027, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Oct 2018

This is a very interesting wine that in all honesty hardly seems like Sangiovese. Proprietor Giampaolo Motta shared my surprise and agreed that the 2011 Carla 6 is indeed deceiving. This single vineyard was planted in 1999, but not all the vines are in tip-top shape, so there has been a good amount of replanting. This year, 2011, represented the first harvest completed in Motta's Ferrari race car-inspired winery. Stainless steel fermentation tanks are arranged in two rows of six, symbolizing a 12-cylinder engine. The floor tiles are arranged in black and white patterns just like a checkered flag. This was an extremely hot vintage that was fermented to dryness, resulting in 15.9% alcohol. That power is the main reason you would not peg this wine as Sangiovese.
