Mount Eden moves from success to success across all varietals in this iconic, age-worthy vintage. The 2013 Pinot Noir Estate is squarely in its secondary phase and exudes pure class from the start. It has an exotic, beautiful and responsive nose of pomegranate, underbrush, saffron and dried rose petals. The palate is simultaneously luxurious, refined, juicy and quenching, with a blooming and expansive finish. This wonderfully complex and beautiful wine should be experienced now if opportunity allows and cellared further if quantities permit.

The 2013 Pinot Noir is endowed with real tannic heft and power. Still very young, the 2013 is a big, strapping Pinot. Graphite, black cherry, cloves, leather and licorice add to an impression of gravitas. The aromatics are just starting to open up, but the 2013 still needs time, so readers should plan on being patient. "Two thousand thirteen was the mirror image of 1984," says Patterson. "A lot of everything."

Mount Eden's 2013 Pinot Noir is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. Dense and powerful, yet also very tightly wound, the 2013 is in no mood to show all of its cards. Still, the intensity of the vintage is impossible to miss. The 35% whole clusters are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. This ample, large-scaled Pinot will reward those who wait. I will not be surprised if the 2013 is even better in another few years, as it holds considerable promise.

Smoked meat, spice, sausage, dark cherry fruit. Big, bold style that has great purity and density. Drinking well now. (RH)
