The 2005 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Villa Gemma shares many qualities with the San Martino - which is to say gorgeous dark fruit- but also imposing tannins that threaten to dominate the wine's overall balance. This intense, powerful Montepulciano needs time to absorb its oak. If the plumpness of the fruit emerges it will be an even better wine that my note suggests.

The 2005 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Villa Gemma shares many qualities with the San Martino - which is to say gorgeous dark fruit- but also imposing tannins that threaten to dominate the wine’s overall balance. This intense, powerful Montepulciano needs time to absorb its oak. If the plumpness of the fruit emerges, it will be an even better wine than my note suggests. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020. The passing of Gianni Masciarelli in 2008 left a huge void in the world of Italian wine. To be honest, I haven’t always been the biggest fan of Masciarelli’s wines but his contributions to the oenological landscape in Abruzzo are irrefutable.
