Hébrart's 2009 Brut Premier Cru Special Club is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with aromas of warm bread, orange oil, walnuts, spices and smoke. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and elegantly textural, with an enveloping core of fruit, chalky dry extract and ripe acids. The blend was 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, and Hébrart tells me that it includes less fruit from Ay than is the case today.

Greenish yellow. Intense lemon curd and pear aromas are complicated by suggestions of anise, green tea and buttered toast. Vibrant, deep, mineral-laced citrus and orchard fruit flavors pick up a sexy floral quality with aeration. Quite nervy for a hot-year Champagne, finishing sappy, incisive and very long. Disgorged in March, 2014.

The 2009 Brut Special Club is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Orange peel, mint, spice and rosewater are some of the many notes that meld together in the glass. The 2009 offers lovely immediacy and intensity. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. Disgorged March 2014. Dosage is 6.5 grams per liter.

The Special Club is the top cuvée of Marc Hebrart and the pale yellow 2009 is a really subtle and highly elegant and refined Champagne full of expression and personality. Bright, fresh and precise on the nose where citrus flavors are intertwined with chalk powder and lovely pip fruit aromas, the palate is rich and intense but also pure and extremely delicate due to a light and refined mousseux. Firmly and minerally structured the finish is very complex, persistent and stimulating. Still young and a little bit sweet this is an excellent Champagne with a very good aging potential.
