Tasting notes
The Piero Busso 2021 Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese is a dense and austere expression marked by darker fruit tones, pronounced depth and firmly structured tannins that immediately set it apart. The palate shows power paired with finesse, delivering ripe fruit wrapped in a more contracted and serious frame that will need time to fully reveal its potential. Sourced from vines dating back to 1948 rooted in limestone-rich clay soils without sand, this “vineyard of the heart” is fermented in wooden vats and aged in large Slavonian and Central European oak casks, underscoring its long-term ambition.

The 2021 Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese is another super-expressive wine in this range from Busso. Ripe, layered and resonant in the glass, the 2021 is so alluring. Sweet red cherry fruit, rose petal, mint, sage and blood orange all come alive in the glass. This vivid, nuanced Barbaresco delivers the goods, and then some.
A bit of a shock on the nose after the Barolos! Very pale rust. Very slightly stewed fruit robs this one of its purity. (JR)
