Here is a tonic, fresh and energized Barolo from Monforte d'Alba. Gianfranco Alessandria's 2013 Barolo is a pleasure to drink, and it will undoubtedly continue to offer that vibrant drinking pleasure for many more years to come. The wine achieves elegance and balance with dark fruit, rose hip, tar and licorice. Silky but firm tannins tie it tightly together.

Alessandria's 2013 Barolo is supple, forward and open-knit, with lovely interplay between the bright red stone fruit, floral, white pepper and minty flavors. This is an especially polished, sensual Monforte Barolo, but it will need a few years to shed some tannin and come into its own. There is more than enough brightness and freshness to allow the 2013 to develop gracefully to age 10-12.
Monforte d'Alba. Quite dark ruby with orange tinges. Brooding and with some power underneath. Soft, red concentrated fruit underpinned by firm, dry tannins. Charming oak note and plenty of depth on the finish. Quite accessible already and concentrated. (WS)
