Pale gold. Quite broad and evolved on the nose. Some hint of butterscotch and acidity but not quite knitted together. Quite chewy on the finish. Chunky rather than refined. Lightly chalky notes. (JR)

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners Kumeu/White Burgundy tasting. The 2010 Chassagne Montrachet Champ Gain from Michel Niellon has a lucid silver/straw color. The bouquet is well balanced and quite complex with a light hazelnut and smoke scent developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, quite angular tannin. This is an edgy, almost Muscadet-like Chassagne with a strong marine/saline element dominating the finish. Still youthful, it will need another 2-3 years in bottle.
Aromas of mirabelle, soft citrus fruit and wild herbs. Juicy, dry and tight; leaner and less fruity than the Clos Saint-Jean, showing a strong smoky, stony minerality that I did not find in the 2011 version of this wine. Finishes broad and resounding, with a strong wet stone character. This will need time in bottle.
Lemony, correct. Well sculpted with enough fruit in the middle. (JR)
